EXCLUSIVE: Sam Short Chats About Debut EP 'Faulty Wiring'

Sam Short hit the ground running when she released her first single, “Already Mine,” last year and effortlessly captured the attention of millions on streaming platforms. The singer-songwriter appeared to take the music industry by storm overnight with her relatable lyrics and dynamic vocals. And after garnering the support from listeners all around the world with a few more singles, Short surprised fans with her debut EP, Faulty Wiring, in August. The project features four new songs and also includes a stripped down version of “Hooked.” In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, Sam Short opens up about her debut EP, the project’s visuals, and more.

What can you tell us about your recently released EP and the process behind creating it?

‘Faulty Wiring’ details my experience through one of the hardest years of my life. I wrote a majority of these songs about coming to terms with my own demons. However, each song taps into a different part of my psyche. Most of the tracks were produced by Liza Kaye and Joe Pepe, who were amazing collaborators throughout the process.

You also just released a music video for “Faulty Wiring.” How did the concept for this particular visual come about?

I love shooting film and am a big fan of montage-like videos and edits. This particular video was inspired by that kind of style, similar to Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” video. We actually shot a majority of the footage in January, at the same location where we shot the “Masterpiece” music video and the “Hooked” visualizer.

What track was the most difficult to record or master on this project?

“Hooked (Stripped)” was a total b*tch. And it was the one we thought would be the easiest! We just couldn’t get the feel right. I swear we did like 10 versions!

Did the songwriting process for “Faulty Wiring” as a whole differ from how you have written songs in the past at all?

“Faulty Wiring” came pretty naturally as a concept, but I will say that I went back to that song many times and made tweaks. It didn’t feel complete until I took the song to friends of mine who are also artists and they kind of helped me round out the concept, which I am super grateful for. After finishing that last song with them, I knew the project was done.

Do you plan on getting out on the road any time soon to play these songs for your fans?

Yes! I can’t say too much yet, but that is definitely that plan.

What can fans look forward to in the near or distant future?

Fans can look forward to new music, and then more new music. I will say there are some special surprises coming this fall.
